'Tearing down'
'Tearing down' is used in book binding circles to describe disassembly of a book ie removing the case (hard cover) and separating the signatures (inside pages)
The only real way to do a high-res scan of the pages to be featured is by dissembling each of the ten original Penrose annuals.
Carefully remove the old cover while preserving the original pages.
Remove the dust-jacket and lay the book flat on the desk. Open the books front cover and carefully cut along the inside of the cover where the end paper is attached to the the book block. Close the book and holding it closed carefully turn it over and repeat the process on the inside back cover.Repeat the process
Split the book block into its individual signatures
Penrose often used different papers in sections of varying page lengths according to the content. From high-gloss coated stock (paper) for photography features to thick uncoated stock often used for 'The Penrose Survey' it also used tip-ins of single specialist stocks.
